A Moon sign is a signification, not a forecast
Your daily mainstream horoscope says: “Moon in Cancer? You feel everything, all the time.”
The Moon changes sign every two to three days, so the day you were born fixes its sign and the hour can move its degree. That is a position; 'you feel everything' is a horoscope.

How the Moon sign is found

The Moon on your birth day
Your birth date places the Moon within a stretch of about 13° of the zodiac, the distance it travels in a day.
- Step 2
The hour moves the degree
Within that day, the birth time fixes where in the stretch it stood: with a time, the degree is exact to the arcminute; without one, it is computed for noon.
- Step 3
The sign, and when it is uncertain
On many days the stretch sits inside one sign. When the noon position is within 7° of a boundary, the answer says the Moon may have been in the neighbouring sign, and the birth time settles it.

- Do I need my birth time for my Moon sign?
- Often not. The Moon changes sign about every two and a quarter days, so for many birthdays the date alone settles it. When the noon position sits within 7° of a boundary, this page says the Moon may have been in the neighbouring sign—and the birth time settles it.
- How precise is the degree?
- With a birth time, to the arcminute—the same Swiss Ephemeris positions professional software reads. Without one it is computed for noon, and since the Moon moves about 13° a day, the true degree can sit up to about 7° either side of it.
- Is my Moon sign the same as my Sun sign?
- Only for births in the couple of days around a New Moon, when the two travel together. The Sun takes a month to cross a sign; the Moon takes a little over two days.
